TRISHANKU EXPRIENCES IN STEPHEN GILL'S FICTION

Chief Editor: Dr. Dominic Savio. About the

Trishanku, a Hindu mythological character,  is widely known through the phrase" Trishanku's heaven". Trishanku had the unique desire of ascending heaven in his mortal body. With sage vishwamitra's power he is pushed to heaven but the alarmed gods  seek Lord Indira's aid who makes him fall back to earth. Furious vishwamitra arrests his fall,  suspending  him in the mid-air. Eventually the sage creates a new heaven for  Trishanku where he would rule upside down without overpowering  Lord Indira. Trishanku is thus suspended mid-air between the  place of his birth, the Earth,  and the place of his choice, the Heaven,  like the present day immigrants.

Trishanku elements can be traced in the poetry and prose of Stephen Gill.  This book includes papers and articles on the fictions of Stephen Gill, including Immigrant (novel), Why (novel) and Life’s Vagaries (short stories)
